Cranial Ultrasound enters the brain

In cranial ultrasound, the uses of the sound waves that are reflected is seen. It is basically used to take the images of the brain as well as the ventricles that is the inner most chambers of fluid flows. The fluid which flows through them is known as cerebro spinal fluid, which is abbreviated as CFS. To visualise the complications of growth in the pre mature babies this test is done and in the case of adults it is used to see the inner brain masses while performing the surgery of the brain.

After the full formation of the brain, cranial ultrasound is not so much effective, because the waves that are used to perform the test cannot pass through the bones. This is the main reason it is basically effective on the babies as the bone of their skull which is called cranium, is nor fully developed and it is soft. And in adult it can performed when the brain is opened while surgery. The best time to perform this test if required is 18 months from birth.

It is very useful as well as helpful in the case of babies and it is carried out to visualise the complications, there are many more reasons to carry out this test. In the case of premature babies, it is used to find out, diagnose and cure the bleeding for example intraventricular hemorrhage, which is commonly known as IVH, to look for abnormalities such as periventricular leukomalacia. The short form of periventricular leukomalacia is PVL. The abnormalities like these become a risk in the growth and development of the child. As a result the child can develop cerebral palsy that is a form of mental retardation.
